Since at universities \u2013 in\ncontrast to schools \u2013 many people in changing groups participate in completely\ndifferent events, special protective rules for corona continue to be necessary,\npreventing a complete return to normal operations for the time being. The\ncoming winter semester will therefore be a hybrid semester, i.e., a combination\nof in-person and online teaching. In coordination with the university executive\nboards, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts has developed a\nconcept to this effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Places for learning together<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversities are places for\nlearning together \u2013 this should be lived in in-person formats whenever justifiable\nfrom a hygiene perspective and organisationally feasible,\u201d explains <strong>Hessian Minister of Science\nAngela Dorn<\/strong>. \u201cI am very happy that with a\nlot of work and creativity, the Hessian universities already managed to do a\ngood job organising study and research operations under difficult conditions. Based\non interim results to date, both digital teaching and the carrying out of exams\nhave functioned well overall. My sincere thanks for this success go to everyone\nat the universities, the lecturers and professors, the employees in\norganisation and technology, and the students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not all events in-person <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eBecause the corona pandemic\ncontinues to pose special challenges on spatial conditions, for example\nregarding distancing, sanitising and routes, not all events will be able to\ntake place in person in the coming winter semester,\u201d continues <strong>Minister Dorn<\/strong>. \u201cThe experience\nuniversities have gained with digital formats are very valuable for improving\non-line teaching, which continues to be necessary. In deciding which events can\ntake place in person, the universities will orient themselves on students being\nable to reach their qualification goals in the best way possible. This means\nthat certain groups of students and event formats have priority. This includes\nbeginning students and students who are in the final phase of their studies. It\nalso includes students with a high requirement for in-person events such in\nlaboratories, in the areas of art and music, in project work and sports. Events\nthat are not possible without direct discourse, such as tutorials and seminars,\nare also in focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Better equipped than at the\nstart of the pandemic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chair of the <strong>Konferenz\nHessischer Universit\u00e4tspr\u00e4sidien (<\/strong><strong>Conference\nof Hessian university executive boards) and Goethe University President\nProfessor Dr Birgitta Wolff<\/strong>, says: \u201cFortified by diverse experiences from\norganising digitally supported teaching in the summer semester, Hessian\nuniversities are significantly better equipped for the coming winter semester\nthan at the start of the pandemic. We also recognise that there can be no \u2018one-size-fits-all\u201d\nsolution for Hessian universities. It is helpful, therefore, that the state is\nproviding a framework for the organisation of teaching in the winter semester in\norder to improve planning security on the one hand, and on the other is taking the\ndifferent university profiles, discipline cultures and individual spatial,\ntechnical and administrative options into consideration. The most important\nthing is that we don\u2018t lose our students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Continuing development of online\nformats<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHesse\u2019s universities for\napplied sciences want to use this winter semester as opportunity to continue\ndeveloping the online formats for teaching and at the same time to cautiously\nreturn to academic in-person operations. We strive for direct exchange between\nteachers and students wherever it makes sense and is justifiable &#8211; for example,\nin laboratory work in small groups, which plays a central role at every university\nof applied science in teaching practical qualifications, and in manageable\nintroductory events for new students,\u201d explains <strong>Prof. Dr. Matthias Willems,\nPresident of the Technischen Hochschule Mittelhessen and Chair of the HAW\nHessen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hybrid concept\nfor art academies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe art academies implemented digital courses with great commitment during the summer 2020 semester to compensate the cancelled in-person courses at least somewhat and transitionally,\u201d states <strong>Professor Bernd Kracke, President of the University for Art and Design in Offenbach <\/strong>in the name of the art academies.\u201cBut at the same time, it confirmed that the teaching of art and design is very difficult without proximity, direct viewing, and in-person contact. We see it as an opportunity and a challenge to expand teaching in the art academies again in the coming semester, as far as the situation allows. This requires a hybrid concept, tailored to specific needs, that combines digital and analogue courses. The focus is also on first-year students: despite corona, they should be given the best possible personal start to their studies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color
